Open Board Meeting

October 30, 2016

Meeting called to order at 8:03 PM

 Present:  President - Denise Valkema, 1st Vice President - Paul Martinez, 2nd Vice President - Miranda Kilby, Secretary - Sylvia Young, Treasurer - Gloria Mills-Hicks, board members: 2 Jorge Hernandez and 3 Tekesha Saffold

 Secretary Report:  A motion was made by Jorge to accept September 25th minutes as sent via email; second by Miranda.  Motion approved by all and passed. A motion was made by Miranda to accept October 13th minutes as sent via email; second by Tekesha.  Motion approved by all and passed.

 President report:  10/14 I spoke at a white cane day event in Miami.  10/15 I attended the Melbourne Space Coast chapter meeting and car show with Jorge. It was a pleasure to personally meet the members and to participate in the event.  10/18 I attended a teleconference about FOPBC.  10/20-23 I attended the Bell Academy novice/intermediate training at the NFB Jernigan Institute.  10/27 I met to draft our 2016 Washington seminar application. I am glad our leaders list is now on nfbnet.

 Division/committee/chapter reports:

Tekesha reported the Palm Beach Chapter congratulated John Crossly as new Vice-President.  They had a White Cane Safety Day walk with news coverage and Rick Gonzalez participated.  They have a new fundraiser for a $50 Honey Baked Ham gift card to be raffled off during their holiday party.  The Empowerment committee met in September about voting issues.

 Jorge reported the Space Coast Chapter held their Car Show on October 15th.  Congratulations for gaining over 50 members in their 1st year of service.  They had two white cane proclamations from both the city and county.  Treasure Coast chapter has moved their meetings from Tuesdays to Saturdays and their next meeting is November 12th.  The Fundraising committee thanked all chapters for their participation in the Daily Winner Raffle.  We surpassed last year’s sells already.  The winning tickets will be videoed and posted on the list serve. The lapel pins sells will be held for later next year due to the holidays and will sell for $8.

 Treasurer Report:  As of September 30, 2016, ending bank balances: Operations Account $11,669.14 and NFB Newsline Account $46,555.95.   A motion was made by Sylvia to accept the report as stated; second by Miranda.  Motion approved by all and passed. 

 Gloria reported the Senior Committee meeting was not held in October because she was out of town most of the month.  She encouraged more members to participate with this committee.  They will hold the next meeting the 2nd Thursday of November.  The Events committee will meet soon pending a consensus on a meeting date.

 Sylvia reported the Tallahassee Chapter raised over $1400 at their Pancake breakfast fundraiser at which Kohls employees assisted. They participated in a White Cane Walk in the park in October and are planning a Thanksgiving Awards Dinner in November. The November/December Newsletter is already in preparation.  She is hoping to get lots of input from all the chapters.  Please have your submission in by November 24th as the holiday will cut into the time needed to work on it.  Divisions and committees please send in your meeting dates for the calendar section.

 Miranda reported The Deaf Blind Division’s president, Tracie Inman resigned recently and will hopefully continue under the leadership of the 1st vice-president, Alicia Benningcourt.  The Tampa Chapter had two successful spirit nights.  They collaborated on October 15th with Mary Shoock, with meet the blind activity to possibly open another chapter in the East Hillsborough county.  The State convention sub-planning committee is working with the Central Florida chapter for the convention which will be held over the Memorial Day weekend.  On December 18th, the next President’s meeting will be at 7pm.  The next Interest topic call will be held 2nd Sunday, November 13th at 8pm on legislative issues.

 Paul reported the Greater Daytona Beach Chapter had a successful White cane activity and health fair.  They are planning a fish fry November 5th.  The Central Florida Chapter had a white cane walk and a Five Guys spirit night on October 17th.  The Statewide Chapter is working diligently on fundraising to help send their members to the convention.  Newsline is seeking marketers for the South side of the state; Joe will be sending out emails with more information.  NFBF will be releasing applications for the 2017 Washington Seminar which need to be returned by December 1st.

 Denise reported that she participated with the Miami Dade Chapter White Cane Days where they had special music and the director of the Miami zoo.  She spoke at Dr. Haynes service.  The Chapter will have special elections the 3rd Thursday in November.  Dr. Henry Alexander also passed away and was remembered.

 New Business:

The Bell training was held October 20-23 for coordinators at the NFB Jernigan Institute.  The theme will be “Growing readers, Growing Leaders”.  The planning meeting is November 2, 2016. 

 The next board meeting will be Monday, November 28, 2016.

 ­­­­­­Jorge made a motion that the business meeting be adjourned; second by Miranda.  All approved.  Meeting adjourned at 8:53pm.

 We had a question and answer session where the general membership was allowed ask questions and make comments.
