NFBF State Board Meeting

July 2, 2016

Meeting call to order at 5:30 PM

 82 people attended the caucus.

 Denise presented both Melbourne-Space Coast Chapter and Suncoast Chapter with official charters.

 Kimberly Banks who is assisting with re-establishment of the parents’ division spoke and asked for contact information for any parents who wish to become a part and/or help get the division reorganized.  She is hoping to have a Bell program next year.

 Officers in attendance:  Denise Valkema - President, 1st Vice President - Paul Martinez, 2nd Vice President - Miranda Kilby, Secretary - Sylvia Young, Treasurer - Gloria Mills, Board Members: 1 Lauren Blum, 2 Jorge Hernandez, 3 Tekesha Saffold, and 4 Rafael Fernandez

 Janet from the Tampa Chapter recited the pledge and Miranda recited the NFB 1-minute statement.  Denise encouraged all members to learn the pledge and NFB 1-minute statement.

 Secretary Report:  The May minutes were sent via email.  A motion was made by Tekesha to accept the secretary’s report as emailed; second by Miranda.  Motion approved by all and passed.

 Treasurer Report:    Gloria reported account balances as of May 31, 2016 are $9,204.80 in the operations account and $41,839.01 in the Newsline account (not including $6,720 additional funds received due to the new contract taking effect).  Gloria explained how to exchange our banquet tickets.  She recognized Miami Dade Chapter for having the most paid members and Space Coast Chapter a close second.  Gloria’s informed us of her new email address: glorianfbf@gmail.com

 President report:  Denise gave an update of her activities since our state convention, including that she has attended meeting of several chapters both physically and via teleconference. Florida has no national scholars this year, but we do have 3 Kenneth Jernigan winners.  She is looking to start a merchant’s committee and working to get the parents’ division re-establish.  Five Florida chapter presidents were asked to participate in the Presidents University.

 Division/committee/chapter reports:

Paul thanked the Orlando Chapter for their13 attendees and for those presidents who are keeping up with the white cane list.  We have 10 scholarship winners.  The Statewide chapter has 7 members present at convention this year.

 Miranda reported the Tampa Chapter has been working hard and have several guest speakers planned for upcoming meetings.  The new Deaf/Blind secretary is Connie Mount and their 1st vice is Alicia Benningcourt and they are still growing strong under Tracie Inman’s leadership.  The Convention committee received 14 proposals for 2017 state convention.  We are tentatively looking at the Doubletree Orlando for $99 per night.  The contract is not signed yet but we are planning for Memorial Day weekend as we got the best prices for that time of year.  She thanked all presidents and vice presidents that have been attending the presidents’ meetings.  We started an Interest Topic meeting and the 1st one was on membership and well attended.  The next one is in July on fundraising.

 Sylvia reported the Tallahassee Chapter is working on growing membership and celebrated Mother’s Day & Father’s Day with chapter activities.   They are planning an annual Pancake breakfast fundraiser in September.  Jacksonville Chapter is doing well and were able to bring several members to the convention.

 Gloria reported the launch of the Senior Concerns Committee and had their 1st meeting with good attendance.

 Lauren reported the Suncoast Chapter is growing slow and steady.   They gained 8 new members and have a total of 20 members.  They have a garage sale and car wash planed in the upcoming months.  She stated Kohl’s will give you a $500 grant when they assist you with an event.  She will give her information to anyone who needs help to set it up.  They made $1500 at their Pancake Breakfast fundraiser which was led by Alicia Kilby.

 Jorge asked that presidents turn in their ticket stubs no later than Monday afternoon for the Apple Trio raffle.  Florida has 173 registered attendees at the convention.  The fundraising committee will have a meeting soon after the national convention.  The KNFB reader is on sale for $64.99 in the exhibit hall.  He thanked Joe Naulty for the great job he’s doing with his chapter.

 Tekesha reported the Palm Beach Chapter has 17 members attending the national convention; including some new members, one of whom is a Kenneth Jernigan Scholarship winner, Cynthia McKinney.  They sold 100 Roger Dean tickets and have other fundraisers planned.  The Empowerment committee should be sending out an email soon for upcoming meetings.

 Rafael thanked members for helping in the exhibit hall at our table.  FABS is working hard on membership and have a raffle for a I-phone SE, winner to be drawn at convention.  Judy president of the Gainesville Chapter and her members are working on building membership.

 The Newsline committee is now under new chair Joe Minichiello and has a new contract.

 Paul made a motion that the meeting be adjourned; second by Tekesha.  Motion approved by all and passed.  Meeting adjourned at 6:37 pm.
