NFBF State Board Meeting

January 15, 2016

 

Meeting was called to order at 8:15 pm by President Valkimer.

President was presented with a gavel by Paul Martinez from the State Board.

Present:  President-Denise Valkema, 1st Vice-Peter Cerullo, 2nd Vice-Paul Martinez, Treasurer-Gloria Hicks, Board member-Miranda Kilby, Board member-Jorge Hernandez.

Motion by Peter to accept December 27, 2015 minutes as e-mailed; it was 2nd by Paul.  All approved.

President’s report:  We have been very busy planning the State Convention.

Treasurer’s report:  This year we made $90,306.00 gross income; expenses were $76,000 leaving $14,000 net income.

Chapter reports

Peter:  Alicia Bentencourt is acting president for the Daytona Beach chapter.  Judy is working hard with the Gainesville chapter coming up with new ways to fundraise and get more members.  The Westend Volusia Chapter (WE) to hold elections in February.

Paul:  FABS is raffling an apple-watch and holding the Penny war.  The State wide chapter has 50/50 tickets for sale.

Miranda:  Tampa has been very busy planning the convention.  Deaf/Blind division has new equipment and will be holding elections for officers this weekend and purchased a table in the exhibit hall.   Suncoast Chapter have 2 raffles going this year.

Gloria: She talked to chapter presidents and encouraged everyone to attend the convention.  All but 2 are here.

Jorge:  Fundraising committee met and is planning raffle for the national convention Shingle Creek NFB raffle 2day 3 night raffle to start selling Saturday.  He will be passing out tickets at the president’s breakfast.  Also have a 50/50 raffle going.

National President Mark Riccobono announced that the Joint assembly of the World Blind Union and   International counsel for the Education of the visually impaired will meet in Orlando in August.  This will be the 1st time they have met in the US.  He extended appreciation to our president and affiliate for the great work we are doing.  He stated that our leaders are approachable and he wants us to take time to speak to him during the convention.

Anil Lewis (executive director of the Jernigan institute) stated he was pleased to be here and support Mr. Riccobono.

Paul introduced the scholarship winners Heather Tuck with the Suncoast Chapter and Alisa Terrell from Tampa.  Two of the winners were not present.  Gloria distributed monies to the winners present.

Announcements:

Peter announced the Daytona Beach Chapter is selling candy and will be holding an employment seminar Saturday.

Denise announced that we do have the assisted listening devices available, so please let us know if you need one.

Merry Schoch announced that she will be registering members for the Pac plan and guide dogs users.  Those that start a new Pac plan or increase an existing one will be entered in a raffle for $100.

Denise announced that the National convention will be June 30 – July 5 at the Rosen Shingle Creek, 9939 Universal Blvd, Orlando 32819. Single/double room are $83 per night and triple/quads rooms are $89 per night.  The Hotel phone number is 866 996 6338 and you may start registration after January 1st.

July 3 is opening session and banquet is on July 5.

Denise stated the positions open for election this year are  1st Vice president, Treasurer, Miranda’s and Rashad’s board positions; along with the remaining 1 year for secretary and Willie Lucas’ board position.

She thanked and commended the current board for working well together.

Joe Naulty thanked Mark and Anil for coming and announced that the new Space Coast chapter has 39 members.

Sherrill O’Brien announced FLADU is having a workshop about access to zoos with guide dogs and they have a 50/50 raffle going.

Dan announced Karaoke will be Saturday night and invited all to come.

Latoya Kendrick announced that Jacksonville chapter is selling chocolates.

Denise reminded us that the 1st 150 persons that registers will receive breakfast coupons.  The long thin tickets cover the meal and gratuity and the short ones give you 50% off.

Paul moved that the meeting be adjourned, 2nd by Miranda.  All approved.  Meeting adjourned at 9:11pm
